This Monday, TISA hosted a group of fourteen young students from a remote village of Khaltan, deep in the mountains of the Great Caucasus Range. Fundraising efforts spearheaded by TISA’s own Primary School teachers, as well as steadfast support from Camping Azerbaijan, brought these young students to Baku and TISA for their first ever far-flung journey outside of their village.
The story began when Camping Azerbaijan brought gifts to the children of Khaltan this winter, taking some fantastic photographs of Khaltan people, nature and wildlife. These photographs were then sold in a joint initiative with TISA’s teachers as large A3 posters. The proceeds from the sale, together with those from the multiple TISA fundraising efforts (remember the Quiz Night organised by Simon Norton?!), brought together enough to get our new friends from Khaltan to Baku.

Over their long weekend stay, the children of Khaltan visited the petroglyphs of Qobustan, the Puppet Theatre on the Baku Boulevard, got a tour of the Old City and even received gifts from Ali and Nino bookshop! The visit culminated with a trip to TISA, supervised by our own Nicola Beale, where the kids were hosted by the Primary School’s P7s and went to classes with them.

Khaltan schoolkids joined us for Visual Arts, Performing Arts, and even some sports in PE. After a rich fun-packed day, TISA and Khaltan students got together in a joint session in the Library, where they exchanged stories of their life and education experiences. One of TISA’s goals is to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who help create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. This fantastic endeavour is a step towards achieving that goal - what better way to understand and learn more about people who live close to TISA community, yet lead very different lives?

There will be more opportunities to learn more about the Khaltan community soon, especially since TISA has an open invitation to visit them in their school and village anytime in the future!
