I really enjoyed it! We had a lot of fun because we got to sing and dance with so many students!

I now know how to make Khonchas!

It is an annual TISA tradition for students to celebrate the Azerbaijani Novruz celebration before the Spring Break. The students took part in a mosaic of fun-packed activities and got a taster of what Novruz is all about. In the Primary School, students painted eggs, decorated Arakhchin (traditional Azerbaijani hats), danced to national music and even jumped over replica fires! Secondary School were immersed in tradition, learning to play a game of "Nərd" (Azerbaijani backgammon) and making "şəkərbura" (traditional Novruz pastries). As a culminating activity for the whole school, the students brought a donations of sweet food items to make Khoncha. Over 600 Khoncha trays were made and delivered to the Mushviq Centre for disabled children, their families and to the Red Crescent Society of Azerbaijan.

It was fun and I am already thinking of the next year's celebration!

- Jake, P6

At the opening assembly, we embraced Azerbaijani culture and the Novruz spring spirit in a beautiful show organised by the students and staff alike. Here we've seen the student dancers clad in gorgeous national dresses and circling to the lyrics in three languages, celebrating the cultural diversity of our host nation. We've heard warm Novruz messages from our alumni, were enthralled by a fiery "Lezginka" dance, enjoyed traditional sweets, and bounced around "səməni", a green bowl of sprouted seeds - a symbol of coming Spring.

It was a great learning experience, being able to teach students about our national traditions.

The holidays; however, are not always warm and joyous for everyone and it is important to remember that not everyone is a fortunate as we are. In addition to the 600 Khoncha trays delivered on the day of the Novruz celebrations, the Russian Club has been visiting poor families in the Garadagh and Binagadi districts of Baku to help them celebrate Novruz  - over 130 families have received a full food package, dairy products, and of course, a Khoncha. You can see the pictures of these children and families, receiving food and khonchas from TISA:

Wait, that's not all!

Happy Novruz! Novruz Bayramınız Mübarək!
