- Bahar Oromi |
Last week, TISA’s IBDP students showcased their end-of-course studio work at an open exhibition held at QGallery, located in the heart of Baku’s visual arts scene. “Coalesce” brought together five of TISA’s rising talents in a tour-de-force of diverse and though-provoking artwork – fusing such themes as cultural influences on modern self, one's emotional revival through art, interaction of human creation with destruction, struggle of individuality against society, and power of personal perspective.
- Kabyl Oxikbayev |
Whereas TISA’s recent “Repurposed” whole arts show drew explicit focus on the physical environment surrounding our school; “Coalesce” offers an insight into the students’ personal and cultural contexts through art: may it be a visualisation of an innate personal perspective, or a depiction of an inner struggle borne of life experiences and cultural identity. Assembled and curated by the young artists themselves, “Coalesce” tells their very personal stories in striking vision and interpretation.
- Maria Terres Morata |
Cultural focus permeates the exhibition’s subject matter. There you will find Kabyl Oxikbayev’s burnt depiction of the Umayyad mosque, wrecked apart by the humanity’s destructive power in the Syrian civil war; and yet there is also a blending of tradition and modernity to fashion the creative spirit of Bahar Oromi’s tale of Iran’s history and revolution. Cultural influences shape our person, but Ulviyya Bayramli attempts to escape from these labels of religion, politics and gender to recapture lost individuality and find freedom.
- Gunel Hasanova |
And yet the personal story forms the centrepiece of their artwork for these talents: an evolution in colour palettes to describe a revival in Gunel Hasanova’s outlook on her life – blue for sadness and unease, and a multitude of colour for the newfound metamorphosis toward happiness. Another is an outward vision of the world through a prism of Maria Terres Morata’s personal interpretation – with a passionate call for others to ‘take action’ and build their own perspective on the elements surrounding them.

“Coalesce” is another in the line of TISA’s on-going successes in visual arts, inspiring the students’ lifelong engagement with arts, and empowering them to visually communicate their personal stories and ideas.
