Elementary Student Council were fortunate to enjoy a session with Catherine Berger-Kaye, a service-learning consultant, on Thursday 20th October. She worked alongside the students looking at our skills and talents. We discussed positive things going on in the school and possible areas for change.

Plus + Delta (change)
  • People having fun
  • Sharing the slide
  • Most people have friends
  • Very few fights
  • Friendship bench
  • UP taking turns on the swing

  • Have an arcade
  • Location of the friendship bench
  • Discovery room at recess
  • Fence by the bank (top and bottom)
  • More steps to the field
  • No fights Signs
  • Bad quality equipment
  • Better sharing of the tire swing

The students worked through the four stages of planning change and then finally put together a proposal through an activity called an ‘Elevator Talk’.

5 Can you please give us support to have time, money and resources and an opening ceremony and an assembly to share our work? ask
4 Our plan is to build more benches, create posters to show how to use the bench, share information, and create a better place. plan
3 There is only one bench by the wooden playground and many children can’t use it. Reason 2
2 Some children don’t have friends so we need more benches. Reason 1
1 We are student council and we need help with the friendship bench. Who we are and what we want

Finally Cathy posed for a photograph with us in our cool student council hats! We hope we can use these skills and techniques in the future development of the Student Council this year.
