My sister and I support each other and love to see each other succeed. However, I do find myself wanting to do better than her in sports events.

A new stream of athletes have taken part in TISA Track and Field season, with a rush of Personal Bests in the arduous Stonepay Mile. The Stonepay Mile demands a unique balance of bravery and brawn, with a mix of challenging hills, straights and erratic springtime gusts to contend with - providing a rigorous test of determination.

With all the challenges that surround the TISA Stonepay mile, the question needs to be asked: Why are so many personal bests being achieved? I asked the veteran Head Coach of the Track and Field team, Simon Norton, for an answer.

"There are many reasons that may guide an athlete to push themselves and rapidly develop. They could have a growth spurt, consistent training in other sports, newfound confidence, or just a drive to get into the team. But the main incentive why so many people have improved their times by so much is that they want to beat the other members of their family."

When the times are on the board, I make sure that everyone can see that I’m faster than him.

I don’t see a huge difference in rivalries between siblings and other competition, you should try your hardest no matter who you’re competing against.

This year’s TISA Track Team includes many family groups, in fact, over 2/3's of the team is represented by siblings - all aiming to achieve bragging rights at the dinner table.

The quartet of Maria, Carlos, Rosa, and Diego, competing in four of the six divisions. The Sadlers are aiming to get back to the winning ways, with the eldest of the trio, Naomi, representing TISA in the senior category during this year's Track Meet. The Saavedras have a strong reputation of being a competitive lot, while the Caskie boys remain shoulder to shoulder through the mile run, recording personal bests within a second of each other.

If you don’t win, you’re going to have to take a whole load of stick from your sibling, so remember not to lose.”

- Ellis, M3B

The loving relationship between siblings Yulia and Marina is put on hold during the 6:33 seconds of doing the mile - the eldest Yulia not far away from the senior girls record. The formidable pair of Nastja and Angelina run alongside their mom, beating their impressive times set from last year.

Sibling rivalry continues to drive the team forward this year, athletes reaching the top of their fitness and skill with drawing guidance and inspiration from TISA coaches.
