What matters is not the absorption and regurgitation either of facts or of pre-digested interpretations of facts, but the development of powers of the mind or ways of thinking which can be applied to new situations and new presentations of facts as they arise. Alec Peterson, first IB Director General 2003:47

Broad, Rigorous and Relevant, the MYP is a curriculum framework grounded in concepts that provide both interdisciplinary breadth and disciplinary depth within an authentic, real-world context. Students are assessed in eight disciplines, as well as in their interdisciplinary synthesis skills. The MYP program also requires that students act on what they learn through Service as Action. The MYP curriculum is delivered through units of inquiry, which allow students to learn by asking and seeking the answers to challenging questions.

Subject Areas: The MYP curriculum is broad allowing students to the following disciplines in each year of the course.

  • Language and Literature (English and Russian)

  • Language Acquisition (French, Spanish, Russian, Azerbaijani)

  • Individuals and Societies

  • Sciences

  • Mathematics

  • The Arts (Visual Art, Music, Drama)

  • Physical and Health Education

  • Design

Approaches to Learning: The MYP helps students learn how to learn. The Approaches to Learning are taught explicitly in all subject areas and help to build both academic skills and character.

  • Communication skills

  • Social skills: collaboration

  • Self-management skills: organization, affective, reflection

  • Research skills: information literacy and media literacy

  • Thinking skills: critical thinking, creative thinking, transfer

Welcome to the Secondary School at TISA. We hope our website can provide a glimpse into the buzz and warmth of our corridors. Step into TISA 3 or 4 and you’ll be struck by the energy – it’s what it feels like to be welcomed and known, to be excited about your next class, and experience the joy of learning.

The Secondary School years mark the transition from childhood to adulthood. Our students, whether in M1 or DP1, are constantly learning about themselves, and our IB and Pastoral Programmes provide ample opportunity to discover what they enjoy and what they’re good at, as well as how they can stand up to a challenge and develop resilience and perseverance they didn’t know they had.

Whether you are a prospective or a current TISA parent, you’ll find more information about who we are and what we do at TISA, from our IB MYP and DP subjects and pastoral programmes, to Service Learning and IB Projects. You’ll also find our policies and handbooks – practical information on how we live our mission in all that we do.

What sets us apart at TISA?

 Our IB Programmes

We’re the first IB school in Azerbaijan, with over 20 years of experience.

The IB Middle Years Programme at TISA is a rigorous, student-centered programme that builds deep understanding and actively develops the future-ready skills to prepare your child for whatever comes next, whether that’s transitioning to another programme in your home country or the IB Diploma at TISA.

The IB Diploma Programme at TISA is well-established, taught by experienced teachers, many of which are IB examiners themselves. We understand the IB, and each year TISA students consistently score above the world average. Our Post-16 programme meets students where they are and provides flexible pathways to prepare them for their plans after they graduate. We are particularly proud of the personal support we provide to each of our DP students in finding success on the pathway they choose. In recent years, nearly 100% of TISA students have been admitted to one of their first-choice universities.

Our Caring Community

TISA is an exceptionally welcoming school. We create safe spaces for students to grow, take risks and learn. At the heart of secondary school is our pastoral programme, TAO (Taking Action Ourselves). Each student is supported by a dedicated team of teachers who ensure that they feel known and supported. Our TAO programme provides a space for student voice, as well as opportunities for social and emotional learning and our Keeping Safe Child Protection Curriculum. We also support new students with a comprehensive one-month induction program, ensuring that new families have a great start.

Our Commitment to Global Citizenship

Talk to our students about a highlight of their year and they’ll likely tell you about International Day, our celebration of international mindedness. However, International Mindedness at TISA goes beyond a single day of foods and flags. TISA students become Global Citizens, taking action and making a positive impact through service learning experiences, whether it’s measuring the impact of food waste in a Maths statistics unit, or as through planning their own Community or CAS projects. They have ample opportunities to learn about the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, become confident in their own power to make a difference, and gain experience in working as part of multicultural, multilingual teams.

Our Co-Curricular Programme

A TISA education extends beyond the school day and traditional classroom. On a typical day, you will find students rehearsing for a play or an international music competition, training with one of our CEESA athletics or debate teams to compete across Europe, or coding robots in our design studio. We also have an exciting range of clubs and activities, nearly all of which are student-led, teacher-supported. At TISA, your child will find opportunities to make their mark and extend their learning. They may even join one of our student leadership teams, StuCo or TAN (TISA Action Network) and have an active role in shaping what TISA students experience next.

Come Join Us!

While some schools might measure success when students graduate at 18, we believe that a TISA education is for a lifetime, best measured in the good lives our students live and in the positive difference they make in the world long after they’ve left our halls.

There’s no school quite like TISA. This is certainly why my family has made TISA its home for nearly ten years. We hope that you feel at home here too. Come join us!

Our Programs

TISA Nursery (ages 2-3)

TISA Nursery, housed in the Early Learning Centre on the TISA main campus, is founded on the belief that a child’s early learning should be a happy, exciting and caring process, making it a first bridge between home and school education. Our ambition is to create a safe and inspiring place where children are positively encouraged to discover their potential and are guided in a gentle and friendly manner to follow their natural curiosity through creative work and play. Children are taught awareness of the world they live in and the people they share it with. We foster their social, emotional and cognitive skills through age-appropriate activities. We understand that children develop in different paces and give each child the individual attention to make each day in the nursery a pleasant, enjoyable and enriching one. Children are taught to be kind and helpful and to learn to share and work with their peers. The time in the Nursery gives them the preparation they need to join the next step in their educational journey.
